A complete interior renovation of a semi-detached duplex on the edge of Outremont. The clients were looking to shrink an existing rental unit and, in turn, expand their own home. Using a series of three dimensional light studies we established a new spatial organisation that maximized the available natural light. Through the creation of a few strategically placed openings and interconnected spaces we took advantage of existing views that, without sacrificing privacy, allowed both view and light to percolate through the building. On the ground floor, structure was reconfigured and replaced with furniture elements allowing an open reading of the plan and a continuous connection through to the garden. The spatial strategies now allow the daily function of the house to follow in step with the course of the sun throughout the day.
